Against downy mildew, our key word: innovate.

In the Land of Prosecco, which produces the wine that helped to raise awareness of the Venetian excellence in the world, downy mildew is a problem that in recent years has also caused losses of 10/15% of the production.

Today a real help to fight fungal diseases comes from innovation as was discussed at Osigo (TV) with AURORAS, a company committed to creating solutions IoT (Internet of Things) for vineyards and agriculture.

“The climate is an important variable on which vine diseases depend – says Pier Paolo Bassi who is responsible for Research and Development for AURORAS – and now you can control it precisely thanks to tools like SAVE GRAPE, the system advanced monitoring for vineyards”.

“You can monitor the values ​​of interest such as temperature, soil electrical conductivity, moisture and many others, continuously and in real time – says Pier Paolo – allowing you to know at all times exactly what is going on in your vineyard so you can intervene immediately as soon as the ideal conditions for the growth of pathogens appear. “

SAVE GRAPE, in fact, thanks to wireless sensors and software with “site specific” algorithms developed by AURORAS, collects data on the field, processes them in order to forecast vine diseases and, in case of risks, alert the farmer. This control can be done both for small and large areas, in the presence of any type of morphological characteristics because AURORAS adopted for its wireless sensors, the innovative LoRaWAN transmission protocol. The LoRa technology allows communication between wireless sensors and gateways over long distances and in the presence of natural obstacles such as hills or trees.
As in this  case, in a farm in the area, AURORAS installed SAVE GRAPE with the wireless sensors in the vineyards located 4 km away from the gateway (here the full story).

For the audience – made up of growers and agronomists – the importance of having data was immediately attractive because they acknowledged that access to accurate information related to their territory would allow them to organize pesticide treatments according to the real needs. This would result in real savings, when you consider that the cost of treatment affects considerably the economy of every company.

It is not an oracle but an IoT (Internet of Things) system that scientifically supports the grower, by measuring, in  real time, data in the vineyards in order to rationalize work, time and expenses. “
