IOT IN THE GREENHOUSE: against the diseases and parasites of watermelons

AURORAS has provided an automated and easy-to-install IoT (Internet of Things) solution to support the fight against fungal diseases and parasites that affect watermelons.

Where

In a greenhouse in the province of Latina (near Rome, Italy)

Main targets

1 – Monitoring the micro-climatic conditions that depend on:

  • The proliferation of molds responsible for downy mildew and powdery mildew of watermelon;

  • The development of the Tetranychus urticae’s population, particularly harmful to watermelons, melons and cucumbers.

2 – Monitoring the irrigation and nutritional status of the soil to rationalize the use of water and fertilizers.

How

1 – A LoRaWAN Weather Station has been installed outside the greenhouse to compare the indoor and outdoor environment.

In the greenhouse, to measure the microclimate and alert in the case of favorable conditions for the development of pathogens or Tetranychus urticae, the following sensors have been positioned:

  • Wireless air temperature sensor;

  • Wireless air humidity sensor.

The detected data is then processed by AURORAS software, based on specific algorithms. This allows to make predictions, send alerts in case of danger and advise when it is the best time to carry out treatments.

Interventions on the basis of real needs, therefore, with the possibility of optimizing the use of plant protection products.

2 – In view of the heterogeneous soil nature, a triple wireless sensor was placed in difficult-to-reach areas in the greenhouse in order to verify the overall conditions of the soil and consequently the water needs and nutritional requirements. This triple wireless sensor measures: soil humidity, soil temperature and Electroconductivity (EC). This latter value is related to fertilization.

To date, the greenhouse is monitored steadily and continuously. Each signal is captured by the IoT system, analysed and transmitted so that the farmer is always aware of what is happening and can therefore take the best measures to safeguard production.
