More healthy grapes with SAVE GRAPE: the power of IoT

In the lovely Italian countryside, near Reggio Emilia (less than 10 miles from Maranello,  principal office of the Ferrari cars maker), there is a wine-producing farm, named Tenuta Santa Scolastica (partner of the association “Cantina Sociale di Puianello e Coviolo”),  which is led by an enlightened wine-grower: Mr Antonio Micozzi.

Antonio Micozzi is always attentive to innovations with a view to the sustainable development, that is why he chose the IoT (Internet of Things) technology of AURORAS to improve the production of his two years young vineyard of Pinot Nero. And the results proved he was right.

“The IoT (Internet of Things) technology is an allied of agriculture” says Paolo Marenghi, CEO of AURORAS, an Italian startup which produces advanced monitoring systems, based on wireless sensors, for vineyards, greenhouses and farms. “Our IoT monitoring system for the vineyard, SAVE GRAPE, allows to know, in real time, the micro-climate conditions in the field and the state of soil and plants”.
“These data are processed on the basis of predictive models – Paolo continues – to alert about diseases, support the decision-making and suggest when and how to intervene”.

And this happened last summer in the Micozzi’s vineyard.

The wine-grower made interventions on the basis of data collected by the monitoring system which confirmed the absence of conditions for the development of pathogens or diseases. He reduced substantially treatments and avoided botritycides unlike the other wine-growers of  the area.

All this meant a significant cost reduction and less waste of energy.

Furthermore, the production was excellent in spite of drought which caused a 20% loss, and the type of vine. Pinot Nero, in fact, is among the vines the most difficult to grow and make wine. It requires suitable climatic conditions and an efficient management: its yield is generally low and is quite sensitive to many diseases.

“The wine-grower – Paolo says – was very satisfied because the grapes were healthy with a natural high sugar levels and thanks to the high quality, a part of production was vinified to make Champagne“.

The analysis carried out confirmed that all the active ingredients researched were below the limit of quantification. A really great results!

“We are proud to help farmers in their job – Paolo continues – It’s very important how they manage soil and plants, not only because they produce food, also for the health of the planet.. And the IoT solutions of AURORAS allow the farmers to listen and encourage the nature and its rhythms in order to come back to more genuine product”.

Technology can support the change: more respect for the environment, cost savings, no more waste of water, fertilizer and energy. Thanks to IoT (Internet of Things), now the Agriculture is really smart.
