SAVE GRAPE, the monitoring IoT system for the vineyards: an application example

PREMISE

1 – SAVE GRAPE is our Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring system for the vineyard.

2 – Internet of Things (IoT) means that devices in a single system communicate with each other automatically, in a smart way.

Without any manual intervention, the system detects data, processes it and triggers actions. Which ones? Those you want.

3 – Specifically, SAVE GRAPE is an Internet of Things (IoT) system consisting of wireless sensors and other components to monitor the micro-climatic and physiopathological conditions of the vineyard in real time and foresee manifestations of fungal diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew or botrytis.

Detection, processing and forecasting:

for this reason, SAVE GRAPE is more than a weather station and therefore a valuable tool to support the decision of the grape grower to know when and how best to intervene in the vineyard. Example: Plan treatments in a targeted manner and not just based on a predetermined schedule.

EXAMPLE OF APPLICATION OF THE SAVE GRAPE SYSTEM

1 – Everything starts with the installation of the Wireless Sensor Group: the Weather Station.

The Weather Station is equipped with wireless sensors for
Air Temperature
Air humidity
Dew point
Leaf Wetness: presence / absence
Wind speed
Wind direction
Global solar radiation
Sunlight
Uv index

The Weather Station is placed directly in the field where it begins to detect the data and then transmits it through a gateway to the AURORAS Services Center for re-processing. Everything is automatic, constant and continuous.

The wireless sensors are equipped with the LoRa technology, a technology created to ensure stable transmission over long distances and in the presence of “natural obstacles” such as trees.

2 – Vineyards, for morphology or extension, may require other wireless sensors, such as the HT sensor.

The HT sensor measures
Air Temperature
Air Humidity
Dew point
Leaf  Wetness: presence / absence

It can be added to measure the particular conditions of an area that has different characteristics from the rest of the vineyard due to, for example, the proximity of a canal.

The HT sensor is available in two versions, one with rechargeable battery powered by a solar panel (HT solar sensor) and the other with a long-life battery.

4 – After installing the WIRELESS sensors, you need to install the LoRaWAN GATEWAY

.

The Gateway is used to collect all the data detected by the sensors and retransmit them to the AURORAS Services Center for data re-processing.

The innovative LoRaWAN transmission protocol is effective for this type of transmission system, over long distances and in the presence of different morphologies.

5 – And to ensure reliable data transmission, here is the High-Gain Antenna

What is it for?

The “high-gain level” indicates great sensitivity in receiving the signal, also coming from sensors located several kilometers away. This type of antenna is ideal in areas where coverage is difficult and where signal alterations are common.

6 – Data collected is sent by the Gateway to the AURORAS Services Center to be re-processed in charts, tables and graphs available to the wine grape grower directly on his / her smartphone, tablet or PC.
