Fertigation in greenhouses: case history with wireless sensors and IoT

In the greenhouse, watering and fertilizing are essential activities. Today you can perform them automatically, when needed and in the right amount.

Auroras designs the automatized fertigation via wireless sensors that act based on custom rules, dependent on the type of crop, conduction and, in general, the needs of the greenhouse. Or it integrates them within systems IoT (Internet of Things), capable of triggering the most desired actions and simultaneously collect data of interest relating to the conditions of the plant and the micro-climate in the greenhouse.

The IoT system allows continuous balance, precise and optimal fertilization and irrigation quantity required for each variety of plant.

How it works:

  • The fertilizer tank mixes nutrients and water automatically, and balances the acidity for a better absorption by the plant. The recipe is adjusted according to the type of plant and the amount of mineral dissolved in the water irrigation.
  • The Wireless Drainage Calculators control the amount of irrigation water that is not absorbed by the plant.
    The flowmeters control the amount of water and nutrients that are served to the plant.
  • To ensure an efficient fertigation, it is also checked the pH of the aqueous substance. The pH is responsible for the proper absorption of nutrients by the plant. In case of rich fertilizer, in fact, the presence of a high pH could cause the precipitation of salts, depriving them the plant and risking clogging of the fertigation system. The drip system releases the fertilizer in the desired amount, according to the preset Ph level.
  • The wireless EC sensor measures the water electrical conductivity of which depends on its salinity. The measurement is important to the recipe of the fertilizer, since the excessive presence of salts prevents the plant to absorb the nutrients.

Keeping under control certain parameters, in fact, you can intervene in a timely manner to maintain healthy cultivation and protect it from dangerous diseases (ex: late blight of tomato).
