IoT and wireless sensors in the vineyard: application in the “Land of Prosecco”

For “VitiOviTec”,  a farm located in  Fregona, in the so-called “land of Prosecco”, AURORAS has designed and installed the SAVE GRAPE advanced monitoring system of the vineyard in partnership with LINEACOM.

CUSTOMER REQUESTS

The specific requests of the customer in this case are:
– fight the danger of downy mildew that in recent years has created serious damage across the land of Prosecco;
– assess the impact of a water canal adjacent to the vineyard;
– adopt a scientific instrument to support decisions in order to carry out targeted interventions in the vineyard.

THE SOLUTION

SAVE GRAPE, the instrument for viticulture built by AURORAS, has been customized to suit the client, choosing the right sensors and setting up ad hoc rules.

SAVE GRAPE is an IoT (Internet of Things) system which consists of interconnected devices that operate and automatically communicate over long distances thanks to the use of  the LoRaWAN technology.

SAVE GRAPE has:
LoRaWAN wireless sensors that measure, in real time, the micro-climatic conditions in the vineyard (responsible for fungal diseases such as downy mildew) and the physio-pathological status of the plant;
– A Gateway for the collection and transmission of data detected by the wireless sensors.

Information is elaborated on the basis of predictive models created and customized by AURORAS.

This software, created in-house, is crucial because it allows you to:

  • alert about the manifestation of fungal disease
  • conduct a guided control of downy mildew
  • reduce the number of treatments
  • save costs
  • improve the quality of the grape production
  • protect the environment
  • reduce the waste of water
  • help the vine-growers in the vineyard management, in order to intervene on the basis of real needs and not on prefixed timetables.

INSTALLATION

1 – First phase: targeted installation of wireless sensors in the vineyard.

Here are the wireless sensors used, chosen specifically to meet the needs of the customer:

The Weather Station has been simply fixed to one of the vineyard poles, without causing hindrance or encumbrance (you can position the unit in any part of the vineyard, even on a metal rod or other props).

VWC sensors the (1 and 2) to measure the
Volumetric Water Content in soil

One HT sensor and  one VWC sensor were deployed in the field, in the vicinity of the water channel, in order to verify the humidity levels and the influence on the vineyard, as well as the presence of any detrimental stagnation for the roots.

2 – Second phase: installation of the gateway.

The adoption of the innovative LoRaWAN transmission protocol allows the devices that make up the SAVE GRAPE system to transmit and receive over long distances, even in the presence of natural obstacles.
As you can see from  the image above, in fact, the gateway for the collection and transmission of all data transmitted by the wireless sensors has been placed in the farm, at a distance of 4 km from the vineyard. You can also observe the presence of natural obstacle, a hill (as shown in the graph) between the farmhouse and the vineyard.

The LoRa technology makes it possible to overcome the problem of distance and “physical interference”, two common conditions when you consider the nature of the Italian viticultural land, very often characterized by slopes, wild vegetation and hilly landscapes.

SAVE GRAPE has now started to monitor the vineyard in real time and continuously, as well as the storage of  the historic data, which will be crucial for the organization and management of the vineyard, not only of the current season but also of those to come.
