The year 2016 will be a year of the digital transformation for many companies. The need to be competitive has inspired a different strategy that involves more than just cuts: today to reduce costs and maintain the quality of the product the company must INNOVATE.
What are the innovations to bet on in 2016?
The IoT for industry
In support of companies, there are new technologies interconnected as the IoT (Internet of Things), that can easily collect data via increasingly sophisticated and efficient wireless sensors. The applications are many: the running of machines and equipment, the detecting of environmental conditions, productivity, and safety.
The most innovative IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) are equipped with the software for data processing that, based on certain algorithms, allow useful predictions for ready interventions or to study strategies for the medium and long term.
The IoT also intervenes automatically in the process, thanks to the ongoing dialogue between wireless sensors and actuators, which trigger the desired actions when a certain threshold has been exceeded. All this with great savings in management costs and maintenance.

Wireless Sensors
Responsible for communication between the physical world and the digital world, the wireless sensors are increasingly available as they are integrated directly into machinery of new generations. Sensors are part of more complex technologies like the IoT, or they are available to improve tools already in use. Their task? Gather data useful to the maintenance of the efficiency of the machinery itself or for other strategic purposes. Their advantages are even greater when one considers the low consumption: thanks to increasingly sophisticated technologies and increasingly small in size, in fact, the sensors are able to optimize the use of energy.
CLOUD
The availability of Big Data through the use of IoT and wireless sensors, requires a place to collect all this information and make it easily accessible. This is cloud computing.
As is clear from the study “State of the market, enterprise cloud 2016”, 96% of respondents believe the cloud is important to make a real digital transformation, 88% consider it necessary to increase business and 65% recognize the advantages for the activity in general.
Today there are several proposed solutions adapted to different needs: from cloud platforms interconnected with several providers to broadband solution on demand.
CLOUD allows to access the Big Data from any authorized device: an input to the reorganization of work that can be done remotely with significant cost savings.
3D printers
Large companies are already using the technology of 3D printing to produce parts of their product. Tesla, for example, creates engine parts with this method. Accuracy, speed and product quality are the characteristics enabling 3D printers to become part of the production process with significant cost savings.
Security systems
The exponential growth of data (Big Data) and the ability to access them from different devices has made the fundamental development of systems and architectures to protect privacy and security. These systems may be integrated to the technology itself or will be implemented in case of need.
As noted by the annual study “PwC Global State of Information Security Survey 2016” which has involved various figures of IT of 127 different countries, by 2020 Italy will spend 7.5 billion dollars for cyber-security services in order to defend for human errors, hackers and technical problems. The offering currently ranges from cyber-security cloud-enabled services to big data analytics and advanced authentication.
