SAVE: the fight against downy mildew

There is an ally in the treatment of downy mildew: SAVE.

SAVE is an advanced monitoring system of the environmental and physio-patological conditions of the vineyard. Its purpose is to prevent and report the onset of the patology on the basis of the agrometeorological data and reliable predictive models. Data are collected by high-accuracy wireless sensors.

SAVE allows the vine grower to treat the downy mildew more effectively at the most appropriate moment and to support the sustainable use of phytosanitary products in accordance with the European Directive on the integrated pest management.

HOW SAVE WORKS:

PRIMARY INFECTION

The primary infection is caused by the oospores of the pathogen.

1 – Absence of infection: data revealed by wireless sensors indicate that there aren’t the climate conditions for a primary infection.

2 – At this stage, SAVE continues to collect the data relating the rainfall and temperature in the vineyard by means of wireless sensors. The data are recorded in real-time.

3 – When the temperature and rainfall reach the preset threshold values, SAVE sends an alert: the infection started.

4 – SAVE calculates the primary infection progress by comparing the data collected in the vineyard with the data of Muller-Goidanich table.

5 – At the end of the incubation period, SAVE sends an alert to suggest a treatment.

SECONDARY INFECTION

It’s caused by the mould spores originated from infected vines.

6  – The data collected by means of wireless sensors show the absence of favourable conditions for a secondary infection.

7 – SAVE monitors the leaf wetness hours and the average temperature (these values are key elements for the onset of secondary infections). The information is transmitted wirelessly.

8 – When the leaf wetness and average temperature values reach the preset threshold values, SAVE sends an alert.

9 – SAVE continues to collect the real-time data in order to identify any following secondary infections.
