Smart Agriculture: the Vertical Farm and the Auroras IoT systems

THE VERTICAL FARM

Which stage could be if not the Expo, to present to the world a project according to the concepts of smart agriculture, now increasingly needed to cope with the increasing demand for vegetables and reduce intensive exploitation of land and resources. We are talking about the Vertical Farm: a greenhouse created by Enea, the National Agency for New Technologies on the basis of the principle of soilless, no pesticides, Zero-km products.

The Vertical Farm is 5 m high divided into several layers used for growing vegetables (for Expo were used lettuce and basil), whose roots lie in a small block of pressed peat dipped in water enriched with nutrients. Being a closed-loop system, it does not need pesticides, plant protection or large amounts of fertilizer (50% saving compared to traditional crops). The water consumption is reduced by 95%: for one kg of lettuce, for example, are needed only 2 liters compared to 40-45 liters / kg of one cultivated in the field.

The vertical arrangement multilayer allows to have a production of 3-4 times higher than that of a greenhouse classical and 7-8 times higher compared to a field cultivation, with a pass – to the salad – from the traditional 6 cycles collecting a year to 14 for each floor.

All this is possible through the use of precision technology that optimizes the use of resources. An efficient climate control system regulates the temperature and humidity according to the needs of the vegetative phase of the plant. Irrigation is automated, as well as the control of the pH and salinity of the solution in which are immersed the cubes of peat, and the integration of nutrients disbursed with the water.

THE SMART AGRICULTURE OF AURORAS

The Vertical Farm is a project, but the technology behind the smart agriculture is already widely available to anyone seeking more sustainable production from both an environmental and economic.

In this field, Auroras operates with the Internet of Things systems for agriculture, greenhouse and viticulture. The systems include wireless sensors to collect data of interest and wireless actuators for automazzate actions, which allow a great saving hours of work, phytosanitary treatments and resources.
