Targeted use of water in agriculture: with wireless sensors and IoT you can.

The water emergency is in progress. “California survived the worst drought in the state’s recorded history. The Governor asked Californians to reduce water use by 20 percent and they cut back on average by 25 percent” (source) .

“In Italy it is not raining, as it should, since about a year, and also the previous year it had seen irregular rains in many Italian regions. In 2015 the dry Fall came after the hot summer. Then Spring recovered, but in many areas it remained in rainfall shortage. ” (source)

CNN stated last 31 May: “The worst drought in a century is forcing the most stringent water restrictions ever implemented for South Africa’s second largest city. Cape Town has less than 10% of its useable water remaining for its nearly 4 million residents”. (source)

WHAT CAN YOU DO IN AGRICULTURE?

Irrigation in the fields is often done as rainfall / overhead irrigation, not always based on the actual needs of the field. Things have to change: technology today offers simple and reliable tools that ensure irrigation is targeted to the real needs of the plants.

These are just examples. Based on the soil and the type of crop, the most suitable IoT (Internet of Things) monitoring system is designed to optimize irrigation at best. The water needs are processed, in fact, by crossing data that measure the plant parameters and the physical conditions of the soil.

Another advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT) systems AURORAS: the adoption of the LoRaWAN transmission protocol that allows you to install wireless sensors even in remote areas from the gateway (the unit that collects and transmits data to the service centre for re-processing) up to 20 km.
