THE ATEX, THE UL AND THE FM CERTIFICATION

The certifications assure products and plants in order to protect the workers, the consumers and the company.

MADE IN EUROPE

The ATEX certification (Atmosphères et Explosibles) regulates the areas with potentially explosive atmospheres on the basis of 2 European directives:atex

– for the manufacturers of equipment and protective systems that are used in potentially explosive atmospheres;
– for the users of equipment that must adopt minimum requirements for protecting the workers potentially at risk in the area with explosive atmospheres.

The 2014/34/UE directive replace the 94/9/CE one (applicable up to 19 april 2016), in order to harmonise the laws of the Member States for the manufacturers of equipment and protective systems which will be used in potentially explosive atmospheres, with some exceptions.

The ATEX certification classifies the risk on the basis of:

  • Gases
  • Zones: for how long gases, vapours, mist or dust are present.

The purpose: increase the safety and the European supervision, strenghten the credibility of CE mark and facilitate the marketing of these products in the European Community.

MADE IN USA

The UL certification is issued by the Underwriters Laboratories, with offices worldwide, that drafts safety-standard and provides safety-related certification, validation, testing, inspection, auditing, advising and training services.

The UL mark is required for the selling of some products on the North American market. The UL certification assures the compliance with US safety-standard.

The FM certification is issued by FM Global, a mutual insurance company that evaluates the property or the work practices of the customers and suggests improvements in order to reduce risks and losses.

COMPARISON

The previous certifications depend on different national rules.

For equipment and protective systems that are used in potentially explosive atmospheres, the ATEX certification differs by the classification of gases, ignition temperature and zones.

Concerning the intrinsic safety (the principle according to which you can prevent explosion limiting electricity and the surface temperature), the European legislation is more restrictive on the basis of the dangerous zones.

Other differences can concern the use of materials (cables, fuses..).

The Atex  Certification is issued by authorised  companies in accordance with the European laws, while FM and UL certifications issue relations that allow the use of FM and UL marks.
