Wireless sensors to fight downy mildew in the vineyard

Because of a rainy and cold spring and beginning of summer, the downy mildew attacks have been strong in Bordeaux and other regions in France, in Veneto (Italy) and in other European countries.

Where have not been done in a timely manner the necessary phytosanitary treatment, the loss of production was heavy.

The more delicate phenological stages are those between pre-blossoming and berry swelling. The wine-grower has to verify the presence of mildew on leaves and small bunches and intervene to prevent the disease spread during fruit development.

Downy mildew causes the drying of the affected grapes or, in the earlier stages, browning and drying of bunches. The result is the same: the loss of the production of grapes.

Early treatments are indicated in the prevention of downy mildew. But when to get them?

Today the technology of the Internet of Things (IoT) provides to the wine-grower interconnected smart objects that act automatically such as wireless sensors.

The wireless sensors are high-tech and easy to use. They are located in the field and each one will measures an agro-meteorological value such as temperature, air humidity or soil, leaf wetness, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, rainfall.

These data are important to know how to manage the vineyard, since it is known that most of the fungal diseases depends on the combinations of data values of temperature, humidity, leaf wetness.

There is one sensor for each micro-climate value to detect.

There are also more advanced monitoring systems that integrate the different sensors such as SAVE GRAPE.

How does SAVE GRAPE work?

  • It measures the micro-climatic conditions directly in the field so the wine-grower can know precisely what is happening in its rows;
  • It combines the data collected and, on the basis of reliable predictive models, it warns about probable infections.
